Unity in diversity
What does it sound like to hear musicians’ instruments played at once? The concert with most musicians playing at the same time ever held in Europe will take place in San Sebastian thanks to the Emusik initiative. Thousands musicians from 26 countries will perform, in unison, a musical repertoire including classical pieces, modern numbers, and the song Emusik 2016, specifically created for the occasion. The concert will open the Festival of Music Schools organised every two or three years by EMU, the European Music School Union. Once the Festival is underway, more than a thousand concerts will take place throughout the region, as well as in La Rioja and Cantabria, jointly organised by 70 music schools and including a broad spectrum of musical styles, and from pieces by classical composers to the latest sounds on the music scene. The project uses music as an instrument of coexistence, drawing on diversity and collaboration, and offers the unique opportunity for cultures and countries to exchange knowledge and experiences.

European Opera Days moreOpen door day | Monday, May 9, 2016 | Strasbourg, France
Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union. To celebrate Europe Day, the EU institutions open their doors to the public in early May in Brussels and Strasbourg. Local EU offices in Europe and all over the world organise a variety of activities and events for all ages.

European festival weeksThe festival was brought to life in 1952 by American officers in cooperation with the city of Passau. In the beginning the objective was „to show the common cultural heritage of Western Europe and to emphasize the need of a political union of Western Europe to the preservation and continuation of the values of this cultural heritage“. However, shortly after, the thought of bringing European culture closer to the citizens of Passau as well as to foreign guests became more important. Moreover it is an objective of the festival to overcome political barriers and to make cultural exchanges between people from both the eastern and western world possible. The 64th festival of the “European weeks” in Passau this year serves the motto „pure personal taste”. The whole programme with more than 60 events will be available by the end of March, 2016 in the festival programme book. more
